WHALE CATCHER COMING ALONG SIDE THE FACTORY SHIP ‘ABRAHAM LARSEN’, ANTARCTIC,1956.

These sei whales were harpooned far from the factory ship, partially inflated with a preservative gas and set adrift with radio beacon attached, buoy boats would collect them and deliver them to the factory ship.

HUMPBACK WHALE ON THE FLENSING DECK.

Flensers cutting the blubber from the carcass which will be rendered down to whale oil. The remainder will be boiled down to meat meal and bone meal. The pots below deck have been opened releasing clouds of steam. In less than an hour the whale will have been processed and the next whale would be on the flensing deck.
